Enjoying Valentine's Day at home can be fun to do with anyone—with the right planning! Whether you're trying to keep it low key with your significant other or want to come up with activities to do with friends and family (à la Galentine's Day), there are plenty of festive possibilities to choose from. Pick and choose the ideas you like to create an event that's meaningful for you!
Create a Fun Atmosphere
Set the scene at home with red-and-pink décor. Try starting with flowers—bouquets are always a pretty choice, and flower petals make a sweet accent between place settings at the kitchen table. Heart-shaped placemats or a table runner will tie the look together.
Spruce up your couch with fun pillows or throws, and add fun seasonal decorations (or start a new tradition, like the Target birds). Candles can do more than make the space look cozy; cinnamon scents can make your home smell welcoming, too. Don't forget the music—put on a playlist, like our Love is in the Air mix!
While what you wear isn't necessarily part of the décor, being intentional about your outfit can set the tone. If you're going for a relaxed celebration over heart-shaped pancakes, look for matching Valentine's Day pajamas that the whole family can wear. If your plans are for later in the day, consider dressing a little fancier so the day feels special, or wear pink-and-red clothes to match the holiday theme.
Prepare and Eat Themed Food
Heart-shaped food is a classic way to celebrate Valentine's Day. Breakfast (or breakfast for dinner) is a great opportunity for heart-shaped pancakes. If you're feeling adventurous, consider learning how to make latte art and draw hearts with steamed milk as a part of your morning caffeine routine.
If savory meals are more to your tastes, try making heart-shaped pizza! You can roll out the dough to bake in a heart shape or even cut toppings like pepperoni into symbols of love.
Themed snacks like red-and-pink cupcakes are fun and simple to make to enjoy together as a family. If you want to take your treats to the next level, try this recipe to make cookies shaped and decorated like conversation hearts. If you're not into baking, assemble a grazing board filled with red fruit like raspberries, strawberries, and apples….bonus points if you include melted cheese or chocolate fondue!
Plan and Play Games
Board games are a surefire way to have a good night and get everyone in the family involved. Try playing Tapple with Valentine's Day-themed categories or print these themed cards to play a round of Valentine's Day Hedbanz. You could also hide paper hearts around the house for a homemade scavenger hunt! These printable clues are a great way for young kids to feel included in the activities. Valentine's Day Bingo is another game to get kids of all ages in on the fun. Try this printable version from Reader's Digest.
Make Valentine's Themed Crafts
Exchanging Valentines or Kindness cards are the best part of Valentine's Day, but it can also be fun to make additional cards for neighbors, teachers, or coworkers. Get creative and tuck your notes inside of easy-to-make heart envelopes. Then, make beaded bracelets together to exchange with your cards! With a little prep before your party, you can make a cute, themed photobooth or backdrop for taking pictures together. These instructions for a simple xs and os design only take a little wrapping paper, scissors, and double-stick tape.
